What is a Mindful Outdoor Experience?

A mindful outdoor experience typically involves slow, gentle walks in nature, during which participants practice present-moment awareness as they absorb the sights, sounds, smells and textures of the forest. These experiences also typically include a nature meditation or “sit spot” practice and time to connect and share as a group. During the closing circle, many mindful outdoor guides share wild-foraged teas and snacks with the group. If appropriate, mindful outdoor experiences may also include learning practical outdoor skills such as birthing fire, wildlife tracking, tree/plant ID or foraging. It is not necessary to have access to a large, pristine natural area in order to receive the benefits of spending mindful time in nature. Also, participants do not have to be “outdoorsy” or athletic in order to participate. These experiences are gentle, move slowly and do not cover a lot of ground.
